I was thrilled to be invited by Kate, one of my Bump to Baby clients, to document the final weeks of her pregnancy earlier this year. We were so lucky as it was one of the very rare days this winter when the sun shone brightly through the windows of her gorgeous home giving us the perfect light and resulting images were stunning.
So what’s involved in a maternity session?
I prefer maternity shoots to take place in the comfort of your own home or, weather permitting, at a location of your choice. Props are optional but always welcomed – some new baby clothes, a scan photo or anything that is of sentimental importance that we can work in to your images.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to bare your bump like Kate did – in fact she started off the session with absolutely no intention of doing so but as she relaxed and began to enjoy herself it seemed a natural progression for her – and I’m so pleased that I gave her the confidence to do that, she had the most perfect bump and now has the most perfect daughter to go with it!
What to wear for a session?
As you can see, Kate has opted for colour blocking and played safe with blacks, whites and dark maroons. This is a great trick because it enhances your beautiful bump and focuses attention on you.
Kate was around 38 weeks pregnant by this stage so comfort absolutely came first. I normally recommend bump shoots take place between 32-36 weeks just in case baby decides to arrive early, plus your tummy will be beautifully rounded by this point.
If you’re intending to bare your belly during a maternity photography session then avoid wearing tight fitting clothing that leaves marks on your skin.
Hands and feet can make wonderful props, don’t forget to treat yourself to a manicure, pedicure or both before the session – you’re pregnant, you totally deserve it!
I love the colour scheme of the clothes featured in this what to wear board – you can find more what to wear to your photoshoot inspiration here.
