I am so glad that spring has finally decided to grace us with it’s presence. It’s been a miserable winter hasn’t it? I’ve missed the sun and being able to get outside to make the most of our surroundings. So when we were blessed with sunshine and blue skies recently I took a trip down to the Sussex countryside to visit the amazing Ouse Valley Viaduct.
I’d seen it a couple of times when I was en route to client sessions, it’s quite spectacular to see from the road. Up close it’s even more amazing and it’s a location I will certainly be using again!
A Letter to my Son
I’ve recently become a fan of ‘Letters to Our Children‘ on Facebook. Their principle is simple; “We are a mothers and photographers who share our love for our children through imagery and words.”
This is my son. Today he is seven. Here is my letter to him.
Dear Connor,
Happy Birthday little man. It feels like only yesterday that you swiftly entered the world early one Saturday morning. It happened to be St Patrick’s Day too – you guaranteed yourself that you will always have a very good birthday celebration.
I can’t believe you’re seven already, almost as much as I can’t believe how happy you and your brother and sister make me. Every day spent with you is an adventure, and here are a few things to serve as reminders so you don’t forget what it was like to be seven.
When I asked you what you favourite food was you couldn’t decide between cheese and apple, basgetti (spaghetti) bolognese or yoghurt. Tough call.
You love to watch Deadly 60, Deadly Pole to Pole, anything Deadly related in fact. You also love James Bond films. Your favourite subject at school is History, and Maths – oh and Science.
You play rugby and you are hoping to play cricket this summer. Every time you score a try you always look around to see if I am watching. The proud smile on your face when you know that I am and the fact that you’re so pleased I’m there cheering you on makes my heart literally swell in my chest. You are a natural sportsman – you can throw and kick a ball further than me!
You are a comedian. Each day that passes you never fail to make me smile. When you were a baby you used to drink your bottle, throw the empty one out of the cot and shout “Mormilk!”. When you were a toddler I couldn’t work out how the light in your room used to switch itself on until I found you’d used your chest of drawers as steps to the switch. These days I find notes from you left all around the house; usually signed “Love you Mum. By Conka”. The annotated drawing stipulating the reasons dogs chase cats (because they are annoying) is a favourite. You don’t mean to be funny but you are a natural comedian. There was the time you did the Haka behind your rugby coach and didn’t even notice how many people were watching you half amazed, half hysterically laughing. I can never be cross with you because on the very rare occasions that you give me cause to be annoyed you always say the right thing at the right time that makes it impossible to stay angry.
Your Nan described you as a live wire. I think she’s right, you can’t sit still. You have to be learning, reading, playing, laughing, doing something, all of the time. But she also said that you were incredibly clever. She’s right, for when you do allow yourself to sit still for a few fleeting moments you do things like demolish a whole book in hours, or finish a puzzle none of us could do in three minutes flat. You amaze me.
You are my son. I never thought I would have a son, let alone two. I am so lucky and so very proud of you, of all of you.
Ludge you, to the moon and back.
Mum x
PS you did an AMAZING job in these photos Connor. I hope the Ninja Turtle magazine it cost me was worth it!
