Gone to the Beach – Family Photography Kent

Mother’s Day Photography at Seasalter Beach, Kent

A little while back I put out a shout for a Mum to feature in a family photography shoot. I wasn’t too specific, I just wanted a glimpse into the life of a Mum who wasn’t me for just an hour or two; sometimes we all need a reality check to know what we’re doing is ok!

Luckily for me Dani came along and offered me her time, plus a visit to the family’s beach chalet on the North Kent coast.

Just along from Whitstable across the estuary of the River Swale there is a hidden corner of Kent called Seasalter, which looked simply gorgeous in the low sun of early Spring.

When I arrived the girls were all warming in the beach hut, and the first question was “What do you want us to do?” and as is my usual response “Be you!”. I suggested we let the girls explore first, and then I’d get some pictures of them with Mum. The pictures you can get of people just “being you” are really something quite special.

I love watching families interact. It makes me chuckle when kids are kids; in this case stomping around in the squelchy sand finding snails for me, I do love a snail – and then we had one very soggy sandy bottom about 10 minutes into the session. It didn’t matter, it’s what kids do. I actually think the sandy bottom is endearing; life isn’t picture-perfect, sandy bottoms happen. Mum soon came to the rescue, picking her daughter up, brushing her down, laughing it off together – and then we carried on.

What you can’t see in these family photography Kent portraits is that behind the scenes we have Mum (and Dad!) – in charge of tissue distribution, hair smoothing and coat holding. Funny face pulling, favourite song singing, joke telling Mum. Hugs are free and plentiful and smiles, well smiles were in abundance.

It is always an honour to be invited in to capture just a few special moments in a families story. Enjoy this family, and feel free to leave a comment or share with your friends.
