Francesca’s newborn photoshoot was very special to me. The reason? Her brother Joseph was the first ever newborn that I photographed back in 2011. Here’s a ‘now and then’. Joseph on the right, was a little older than his sister – on the left – at the time (I think he was around 6 weeks) and ‘Baby J’ as he was then, was also my first ever commission as a photographer.

Francesca and Joseph’s Mum is a very dear friend of mine, and as the first person to entrust me with the role as photographer I will be eternally grateful for the chance she gave me. Everyone has to start somewhere and it was J who gave me my starting point.
I also know that memories are incredibly important to the family, and I wanted to gift her these images of her beautiful daughter as I did her son.
A photographer’s journey
I look back on the images from then compared to now and it’s so demonstrative of my journey as a photographer. The family were thrilled with the images I took of Baby J, and back then I was too. Now I look and I know what I could have done differently to make the shot even better.
I believe that some people go into this business a little bit blindsighted – I know I was guilty of that. All you need is a DSLR and a snapfish account and you’re a pro right? How very wrong I was! There’s a reason why photographer’s are so passionate about their job, well at least I’ve discovered the reason why I’m so passionate about what I do now. To be entrusted with the task of creating life lasting memories for someone is AMAZING. There is so much to learn in order to get yourself to a level where you consistently produce results that wow your clients but you have to want to learn to improve.
Getting it right
My time with my clients is a very small glimpse into their lives, but it is a once in a lifetime never to be repeated snapshot. Newborns grow too fast, toddlers become pre schoolers, blink and they’re off to university. Wedding Days happen just once. You can of course repose if something goes wrong, but you can’t get that previous moment back. If I’m entrusted with the task of capturing your memories I know that I have to get it right, and right the first time. I’ve spent a lot of time learning to get it right, and I’m now in a place where I look at the back of my camera and think, “Yep, nailed it.” almost every time.
I know I’ve still so much to learn though, and I do hope that you’ll let me share a snapshot of your lives with you one day soon.
