I saw some clever marketing recently, a floppy disk (remember those?) labelled “What if this was the only way you could view your Grandparent’s wedding?” Well what if it was? Would you be able to see them? Not easily I imagine. What if I stuck the same label on a DVD of Emma Louise Photography images to give as an heirloom to your babies one day?
Now I am as guilty as anyone of storing thousands of photos on various hard drives, backup tapes and online storage accounts. I have a tiny percentage of the photos I’ve taken printed, framed and displayed in my house – and it’s not because I don’t want them all on my walls, it’s because I don’t have enough walls to fit them all on! Many of my clients opt to buy the digital file of images from their sessions on a DVD or USB stick. But if I was to do a quick survey of how many clients have actually printed those images in some way I expect to find that at least some of then had yet to make it off the disk…
I am a gal of the ’80s so I remember video tapes and what happened when DVDs came along to replace them. Same thing happened to floppies when writeable CDs took over – obsoletion. So what’s going to happen to DVDs in ten years or even less?
I’ll give you an example. A close family member’s wedding from 1982 is on a video tape, but no one in the family now has a VCR. We can of course get it transferred to a DVD, we’ve just not gotten round to it so instead it sits there often talked about but eternally unwatched. However there’s still the huge collection of photographs and albums from the wedding dotted around her house three decades on that we can pull out of the cupboard have a nostalgic look at and then replace until the next time. Paper’s been around for thousands of years…storage media is still evolving. I know which medium I’d put my trust in when it comes to photos.
I am now on a mission to get people to ‘Frame it!’ As well as supplying digital images to my clients I provide a wide selection of high quality, affordable printed products. I want to enable everyone I provide photographic services the ability to continue to tangibly enjoy the images I provide for them during the short time we spend together for years to come.
