Light and Colour Child Photography Workshop
This summer I had the opportunity to attend a workshop run by Nina Mace Photography, winner of Children, Family and Lifestyle Photographer of the Year in 2014 with The Guild of Photographers. I’ve always enjoyed seeing Nina’s beautiful portraits pop up on my newsfeed and in The Guild’s image of the month galleries, and so when she got in touch to see if I was interested in attending one of her workshops I jumped at the chance.
The workshop was held at The Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells and began with Nina covering some technical information, explaining her shooting style, and the key part of the session – how she manages all types of lighting conditions in her images. We then had the opportunity to photograph some mini models, who were all brilliant and hopefully had lots of fun whilst being photographed by an eager pack of photographers!
We then regrouped to examine the type of light we had to work with in our resulting images, before we were back out in the early evening light with our older models, who were equally as accommodating to our relentless posing and “Shall we just try one more over there?!” instructions.

I have attended a few workshops over the years, some very good, some not so good. Nina’s by far exceeded them all. There were seven photographers in total on the course, and we were split into smaller groups spending a short time photographing each set of models. Whilst we were working Nina came around to give us some pointers, and suggested the best location for light across a very varied area – I didn’t realise quite how much space, thus photo opportunities there were behind The Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells, it was a very well chosen location.
Nina was willing to answer all and any question put to her about kit, style, and even her competition entries. She explained and then demonstrated some excellent tips for finding light and colour in images, and followed up with an editing demo in a private online group after the session. The models were all fully briefed on expectations of their sessions, as well as being provided with a colour palette for clothing and accessories.
The results of the day, well you can see them for yourself. If you are a photographer looking to develop your craft within this genre of photography I’d thoroughly recommend attending one of Nina’s courses.
Nina - Thanks for the great write up Emma I am so pleased you got a lot from the workshop and your resulting images are fantastic. I hope to meet you again 🙂 Nina
